Whew. What a game.
Spain won most of the ball possession – when the statistic came at 30’ first half it was shocking: 69 to 31!!! Iker was barely seen!
Still, devastatingly, it was Norway who scored first. I was just thinking that the Spaniard would be mortified had Norway scored the first chance they managed to keep the ball, and score they did! It was kind of a lucky score, I thought ruefully.
But then Raúl’s equalizing goal 8 minutes later was even more of a lucky shot. Reyes (which by the way is very yummy) sent a free kick from the right wing and the crowd before the goal erupted and it was difficult to see what actually happened. And then Raúl broke free, hauled by Baraja and kissed his ring; and I realised, "Oh, it’s Raúl."
Of course not every striker could head such a ball during such chaos with deadly aim; such credits must be given him.
Spain continued afterward to control the pace of the game. Iker was seen only when, by chance, Norway was given three corners in a row. One thing could be said about Iker: he had a very good lung! Frantic as he always was whenever a corner was about to be taken, he would yell across the entire stadion for anyone available to defend his goal.
Superior as they were, Spain played very badly, considering. It was frustrating to watch. I had half a mind to get back inside and try to sleep but then, I’d promised Didi I would report the score immediately. (Spain won, Corporal, drop and gimme 30 push ups!)
Halfway into second half, Saez made the best decision ever and sent in Valeron and later Vicente and my darling Joaquin. The stadion announcer must be a great fan of Joaquin for he crooned his name in such a way that the boy himself seemed abashed.
As my fave local commentator Bung Kus (Nasi Uduk?) later said, Joaquin proved to play a great role in advancing Spain attacks. It was his shot that Norway’s goalie had rightly anticipated but unfortunately bounced into his own goal, thus making it 2-1 for Spain.
Kind of heartbreaking though to that poor goalie, he had played brilliantly under the improved strikes from the Spaniard. To have his goal penetrated in such a way, especially sealing the opponent’s victory with his innocent blunder...
Still I couldn’t help chuckling whenever the camera turned to him. He was so pretty he looked like a drag queen doing his day job!
At any rate, he’s far better at facing frontall attack comparing to Iker.
As the attacks got much better, Raúl and other strikers could be seen crowding before the goal. No more goal was scored but if I thought the game wasn’t worth watching before, the thought had vanished into thin air!
Vicious assaults were delivered, alas, only to polish the brilliance of Norway’s keeper. And tve, proving itself to be the best TV station around, replayed a footage of Joaquin manoeuvering the most beautiful dribble where he tricked a defender with a swift right dash, then advanced to pass yet another defender with a double bluff... and never had he wavered or hesitated! Oh boy, it was like the wildest, best kiss ever!
With the 2-1 result Spain was forced to still be cautious. Norway had to win the next game but they could easily do so, with only a minimum score of 1-0 needed. They’d be playing at home, too, so Iker, mind you watch the goal and just tackle any Vikings come your way!
